The OIE, FAO and INTERPOL are joining forces against agro-terrorism. To protect countries and to improve their resilience from potential attacks, these organisations have launched a capacity building project that will be completed by 2021.

In an international environment marked by uncertainty and instability, protecting animals from the malicious use of toxic biological agents is crucial to maintaining global food and health security. For this reason the OIE, FAO and INTERPOL are working on a joint project: “Building resilience against agro-terrorism and agro-crime”.

 

International cooperation against agro-terrorism

Signed in October 2018, the project from the new OIE−FAO−INTERPOL consortium is being implemented until 2021. Its aim is to increase global resilience against agro-terrorism in three priority regions: North Africa, South-East Asia and the Middle East. Its methods: to build the capacity of stakeholders in the field and better coordination between the animal health and law enforcement sectors.

The project will be implemented in three phases: a first phase of study and evaluation, a second training phase and a third phase of international cooperation. A global Conference on Emergency Management to revisit and share the knowledge accumulated during the initiative’s implementation will conclude this first project of its kind.

This project is supported by the Weapons Threat Reduction Program (WTRP) of Global Affairs Canada.
